A very interesting idea was proposed by Asus. A useful device was worked out. But it has one disadvantage that makes it almost impossible to use. Let's find out why.

The elaboration is the following: the company thought that it would be nice to combine portable wireless mouse with flash card. But they have made a huge mistake - the form of the mouse is not comfortable at all, it looks like a memory stick.

One end of the gadget is held by a magnet. You separate the small part and plug it into your laptop's USB drive. In order to charge the device you have to snap it back together while the transmitter is still connected.

Actually, the idea is great. But who will have the desire to use such uncomfortable mouse? On the one hand, it is narrow, like a lipstick. But on the other hand it doesn't fit your hand at all.

It was one point of view. But there is also another opinion. If the shape of the device looked like a usual mouse, it would be too bulky and took much place while plugged into your laptop. But let's remind that the mice for notebooks are often smaller and more compact than usual mice. That's why Asus tried to make mouse for a laptop prettier and more functional.

So, if the device is re-designed and the form is changed a little, made smoother, for example, then a lot of people will like to have it. The form of the mouse has almost ruined a nice idea.

With all the big screen flat-panels cluttering up the HDTV arena, one may wonder if anyone's even paying attention to consumers clamoring for LCDs that can be handled by fewer than four burly gentlemen.

Sony's BRAVIA KDL-26M4000/R is one set that fits better in a bedroom than a den, with a 26-inch panel and a 1,366 x 768 resolution. The gurus over at PC World were able to take the mid-sized set for a spin, and while it found that some tweaking was necessary out of the box in order to get the best possible HD quality, things were pretty swell once calibration was over.

The built-in ATSC / NTSC / ClearQAM tuner did its job admirably well, and it also did a fantastic job of making SD content look as bearable as possible. The biggest knock against it was the price, which shouldn't be surprising for anyone who follows MSRPs of Sony TVs, as critics felt most folks would be happier spending less for similar sets.

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Canon PowerShot A590IS

I own a DSLR and consider myself a photography enthusiast. I wanted a small compact camera with me when I don't want to lug around my DSLR + lenses and equipment. After a previous good experience with the Canon A720 IS, the new A590 IS seemed like a good choice. Since I'm an advanced photographer, I'll focus on the advanced features of this camera. The auto modes work as well as any other camera in its class, but the extensive manual features is what sets apart the Canon A series.

What I like about the camera:

1. Compact, stylish. It's smaller than older A Powershots, and the dark grey color gives it a seriousness compared to the typical bright silver finish.

2. Image stabilization works very well, it allows me to take blur-free photos 2-3 stops below the recommended shutter speed, that means at 35-50mm f2.8 1/10 sec shots are CONSISTENTLY possible indoors without using flash.

3. Good image quality. Expected from Canon, but even better is adjustable contrast, saturation, and sharpness settings, along with the typical JPG compression and resolution sizes.

4. Fast and responsive. I was surprised how responsive this camera is even compared with my DSLR. Shutter lag is very low for a compact digicam, and when I pre-focus with manual focus, it's even faster.

5. Manual modes. Aperture priority and shutter priority are great, the M mode is even better than other A Powershots such as the A720 because now there's a light meter on the right side that adjusts live based on what the camera thinks is the optimal exposure setting. And you can adjust aperture/shutter speed and see how it affects the final exposure. Ideally a live histogram would be even better, but this is very handy.

6. Manual focus. Although the LCD resolution is not good enough, even with the point zoom option, manual focus helps in close-up work and pre-focusing for action or creative photography.

7. Manual flash modes. In addition to automatic flash. The manual flash allows me to adjust the flash power in 3 levels, and prevents a pre-flash. This last part is important for using a remote optical slave flash. I can basically take professional looking studio pictures with this camera with my external flash equipment.

8. Optical viewfinder. I don't use this much yet, but can come in handy in bright sunlight conditions, or when battery conservation is needed.

9. Battery performance seems improved over previous A powershots too. The official specs give it 220 shots on regular alkalines and 500 on rechargeable NiMHs. Good news is they use common AA batteries that you can buy anywhere instead of proprietary models with specific chargers.

Now the negatives. I hope Canon can improve these aspects in their future models.

1. Slow flash recycle times. This is to be expected from a camera that takes AA batteries. Would be nice if the LCD didn't blank out after a full flash discharge. Not a big deal since I use an external flash anyway, and the camera's flash is manually set to medium output as trigger (so recharge is faster). I would not want to give up the AA battery convenience for a faster flash recycle time though.

2. Higher resolution LCD. The 2.5" 115k resolution LCD is ok for framing and casual browsing, but higher resolution would be nice.

3. Live histogram while shooting. This feature is available when reviewing a photo, but not live. Other manufacturers have implemented this, and Canon should also, especially since the unofficial CHDK software mod allows such a feature.

4. Larger aperture would be nice. Such as f/2.0 (instead of f/2.6) at the wide end, and f/4.0 (instead of f/5.5) at the telephoto end. That way a lower (& less noisy) ISO can be used in dim conditions or when fast shutter speeds are needed to freeze action. All the electronics in the world can't replace a good large lens. Also allows more creative depth of field control.

5. A wider wideangle would be nice, 28mm instead of 35mm (35mm equiv). I'd rather see a wider wideangle than a longer zoom.

6. Video feature is not ideal. Optical zoom is not available during recording of video. And the more efficient MPEG4 compression is not used, so video files tend to be large. Also noticed at 640x480 resolution, the highest fps is now 20 instead of 30 from other A models. A definite step backwards.

7. Noise at higher ISOs. This is due to the smaller sensor on compact cameras. But 8 MP is probably the most pixels that can be crammed into a small 1/2.5" sensor. I'd rather have a cleaner picture at 6-7 MP than a noisy 8 MP picture. And if in-camera noise reduction is used, I'd like to see an adjustable setting for how much is being applied.

8. And if I were to be really critical: There's no indicator of what optical zoom level I'm at. Slight image noise is noticeable even at ISO 80 when I zoom in really close on a monitor view. When at the widest angle & aperture, there's slight barrel distortion and blurriness on the corners. Not many compact cameras can do better in terms of image quality, but I'm pointing them out here because even though this camera beats most of the competition, it still has room for improvement.

So overall it's a great camera for the price. Offering great image quality with the auto settings for the casual user, but also a powerful set of features for the more advanced photographer.

The result is often outstanding. Thus, BMW offered to our attention an outlandish model - a shape-shifting car covered with fabric - the GINA Light Visionary Model.

It is made neither of steel nor of aluminum or carbon fiber. The model's body consists of seamless fabric stretched over a movable metal frame. This combination allows the owner to change its shape according to his desire.

It runs and drives as a usual one. Actually, the car was designed for the BMW Museum in Munich, because creating a practical car wasn't the goal for the producers.

Toshiba's laptops with cell-derived chips

Does an ultra-high resolution phone with a large 3.8 touch screen and a 5.2 megapixel sound apealling to you? I know I am interested, especially as I look down at my iPhone 3G. Don't get me wrong, I like my phone, but everything I like about it (except for he OS) is just better on the Aquos Fulltouch.

My car radio supports mp3 and I'm happy with it, but after seeing this multi-functional radio from JVC I can become instantly unhappy. It's mainly a in-dash DVD player with a 3.5-inch LCD screen but it can also play normal CDs and the following audio format files: MP3/WMA/WAV. Besides watching movies on the monitor, it can also be used to view JPEG photos/images. Since it is a radio, it's obvious that it can transmit FM/AM frequencies.

There is a big and ugly remote control that has buttons for all the functions you can imagine, even simple ones like controlling the volume of the 5.1 surround system.

This car upgrade costs $550, but at least you will get a 10-in-1 system. It's just too bad that you can't watch DVDs while driving but I'm sure the passengers will thank you.

Mac Market Share Is Booming

I have shared before that I am a Mac fan, and I have been for years. I have an iPhone, MacBook, and iEverthing. So, for me, it is no surprise to me that a recent industry report is declaring that Apple's Market share grew by a whopping 60% during the second quarter of last year.

This means that Apple shipments during 2nd quarter grew from 6.6% to 10.6%. Most of that growth was pulled right out of Acer and Toshiba's pockets. The report does little to explain the growth, but I personally think it is thanks to the iHalo. That is to say that when people buy an iPhone or an iPod and they like it, they want to experience more of it. Don't get me wrong, I think Vista is a good operating system (heck, I run it on all of my Macs, and it runs better than on any similarly priced or equipped HP or Dell), but the look and feel is very different than a Mac experience. If you are a Vista lover, OS X will drive you nuts, but if you are a Mac person, Vista is crazy. iPhones and iPods have introduced the masses to Apple theory. Some people like it, and so they buy Apple.

I expect that this Apple growth trend will continue. There will be new Macs out sometime this year, and many people will flock to them. If you have any doubts about my prediction stop by an airport or a coffee shop.

I'm a guy, and I would never wear anything called Sparkling Allure, Contemporary Elegance or Evening Classic. In fact, I am not even sure what Allure is, but apparently, my wife does, or at least that is what Sony Ericsson is betting on.

Sony Ericsson has announced the MBW-200 Ladies Bluetooth watches. This line of watches will feature a small OLED display that can connect with your Bluetooth capable phone. The screen will display your incoming caller ID, text message alerts, email notifications, and calendar alarms. It will also feature music controls for music playing phones that you might have.

The different MBW-200 Ladies Bluetooth watches go beyond the basics. After all, what makes them special for the ladies? They also feature gold rims, crystal decorations, color coordinated straps and faces. Currently, the watches are designed to work only with Sony Ericsson phones, and are set to be released during the Q4 of 2008. As for price, my guess is expensive, although Sony has yet to verify this.

I know I never listen to it at all. This new Sanyo R227 internet radio is another nail in the ol' FM's coffin.

The Sanyo R227 is a WiFi equipped internet appliance is capable of receiving both internet radio stations and online Podcasts. You can enter a network key which makes the radio able to work on a secure WiFi network. It is also capable of searching by country, genre, and it will store up to eight radio station presets. First, Walmart was rumored to offer the iPhone in the near future. Then, it was announced that Walmart would be offering the Google Phone (G1). Now, Walmart will be offering MP3s for 74 cents. That's a cool quarter less then iTunes. Realistically, you will save $25 with 100 MP3s, and during these current economic times, that is nothing to sneeze at.

To sweeten the deal, the new Walmart music store works with Windows, Apple OS X, and Linux. Heck, it even works with Safari and Firefox. It would seem like Walmart is really trying to take a bite out of Apple. It also seems like Walmart might be trying to improve their electronics and high-tech image.

Now, the iTunes Music store has 8 million tracks as compared to Walmart's 3 million, and you have to come to grips with shopping at Walmart, but saving money is saving money. What do you think? Is it worth a quarter to shop at Walmart to boost your music collection?

X Sting Wish stops the fire

Sometimes, designers take a look at devices and ask why we do things a certain way. Take fire extinguishers, for example. They are confusing to use with a canister in one hand and a hose in the other. Controls are hardly instinct, so designer Adam Scott has created the X Sting Wish.

As you can see, the X Sting Wish is a regular fire extinguisher, but with a definite futuristic twist. In fact, if Ripley from Aliens needed to put out a fire, she would definitely use this. The design is like that of a heavy machine gun that is "easily used, easily recognized". So all you need to do is point and shoot and fire on the fire.

So, are we looking at a future where the X Sting Wish will be on the walls of office buildings to be used "In Case of Emergency". That is definitely my wish for the X Sting Wish.

True, hovercraft have never really caught on as transportation vehicles, but you have to admit that the Hover Q, a tiny remote control hovercraft by our friends at Brando is so very awesome.

The user can take control of this guy for forward, right, and left movements, and the skirt area underneath will inflate up like a genuine hovercraft. I'm not really certain what more I can say other than it is so cute and I have got to get me one of these.

You should be able to purchase the Hover Q at the Brando website for about $34 in colors of red, blue, orange, and black.

Have you ever been seen that guy on the road that is just chatting away on his phone while he is driving down the road? That guy can be downright scary, if not deadly. I admit, I am guilty of it as well, but every day or two I nearly crash and have to thank God that I didn't die because I was checking an email or answering a phone call.

Aegis Mobility is scared of talking drivers as well. They have developed DriveAssisT software for mobile phones that will effectively cripple your phone while you are moving at driving speeds. Your phone is still active, but calls are directed to a service that announces that you cannot take the call, and they should leave a message or a number.

The Aegis DriveAssisT software sounds like a great idea, but I wonder if people will seriously use it. I suppose that companies and parents can force it on people, but will people voluntarily use this. I think many of us are too tied to our phones to give it up, even if it is to save lives.

Well, the big news is out, and all gadget blogs are buzzing. Apple has introduced the new MacBook and MacBook Pro, with "new design, new features, and new technologies".

It has precision an aluminum unibody enclosure and an ultrathin LED-backlit display. The other highlight is the NVIDIA graphics processor. However, the thing that will really revolutionize the computer industry is the multi-touch trackpad, allowing for "more clicking room and multi-touch gestures".

The price could be a little high. The model with the 4GHz Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB of DDR3 RAM, NVIDIA 9400 and 9600 is for $1999. The other higher-end model has a faster CPU, 4GB of memory, and double graphics memory for about $2499.

NEC Makes 3D imagery Less Dorky

Have you ever seen one of those polarized 3D movies? They have them at theme parks and once and a while your local theater might have U2 Concert or something? The glasses they use are horrendous, and could even turn the Edge into a royal nerd. NEC has heard your cries, and developed a new LCD panel that can deliver 3D imagery goodness without all the polarized shady lameness.

The 12.1 inch polarized LCD panel is capable of creating and sustaining a 3-Dimensional image at SVGA (800 X 600) resolution. The panels, which are going to be marketed towards video game developers and medical imaging service providers. I do think there would be some great home uses for the technology as well. My Stargate and Chuck downloads from iTunes would be nifty in 3D.

The new LCD will be debuted next week in Tokyo, and will be commercially available next week. As of now, there is no information on price.

Not one, but two Space Invaders products

What is this, Space Invaders day? Today, while looking for items to report (yes, I do that), I found not one, but two Space Invaders products.

The first is an alarm clock that is actually made by Taito, makers of the original Space Invaders game. It doesn't look like the clock has the actual game on it, not that it wouldn't be difficult to put the old-school game on it. It would probably have better graphics on it too. It does have a calendar and snooze button.

If the clock isn't enough, feel free to add Space Invaders decals. Feel free put the set of 18 invaders, 2 missiles, and 2 ships to arrange in the classic manner.

The Space Invaders decals are pretty expensive at about $45, while the Alarm Clock is about $79. A little expensive for my taste, but if you want to go all out on Space Invaders Day, these are the products of choice.

I was impressed when my current MacBook could live for four hours on one battery charge; I was even more impressed when the new MacBooks could squeeze out five hours. Panasonic has announced a breakthrough in fuel cell technology that will allow for a fuel cell small enough to fit in a laptop or power portable electronics.

Panasonic's 200cc fuel cell, weighs just 320 grams and runs on a methanol concentrate that can be stored in bottles. This fuel cell, even in its current configuration, will represent a massive leap forward in green computing, power savings, and energy economy.

Panasonic is not anticipating these fuel cells to be commercially available until 2012, but who knows what developments will erupt in the mean time. Energy issues are about to get shockingly interesting.

Robotic Lawnmower Gets a Solar Upgrade

I wish I as was rich enough to be lazy. I would love to have my house cleaned by an army of Roombas, my floors cleaned by Scoobas, and my lawn mowed by a Husqvarna Automower lawnmower robot. But alas, I have to vacuum, mop, and push my own darned lawnmower.

These automatic chore robots are very cool, and in the case of the Husqvarna Automower, they work quite well. They traipse about your yard while constantly mowing, and they turn around when they reach a buried boundary cable that is buried at the edge of your yard. The only real cost, besides the actual unit, is was electricity. That has now changed since the Automower has gone solar.

The mower features a rooftop solar panel that constantly charges the onboard batteries, so now it is emission free, energy independent, silent, and robotic. If it ever decides to turn its 20 inch cutting blade towards its owners, were all in danger. But for now, the Husqvarna Automower is just a darn fine chore robot that will set you back about $3000.

The U.S. Army has released a report regarding Terrorism 2.0. In the report, published by the 304th Military Intelligence Battalion, there is a chapter entitled "Potential for Terrorist Use of Twitter." Sounds scary doesn't it?

I guess it could be true. Terrorists might want to know where each other are shopping, or what the other terrorists are eating right now. According to the Twitter division of the Army: "Twitter has also become a social activism tool for socialists, human rights groups, communists, vegetarians, anarchists, religious communities, atheists, political enthusiasts, hacktivists and others to communicate with each other and to send messages to broader audiences." Be afraid of the vegetarians and the human rights groups. There use of twitter could bring the whole world to an end.

I admit, I have not read the report, but the very concept seems a bit alarmist. Yes, people use social networking sites. Yes some people are bad. Yes, some bad people will use social networking sites. I have also heard that terrorists and vegetarians are both eating tomatoes. Next, the Army will be after our Ketchup.

Dell Jumps on the Smartphone Bandwagon

Hey, if Apple can do it, why can't Dell right? After all, selling 10 Million Smartphones can't be too hard, right Dell? Dell sure hopes so, that is why they are sneaking out a pair of Pharos branded Smartphones while no one is ~~caring~~ looking. Meet the Traveller 117 and Traveller 127. A matching pair of QWERTY, Windows Mobile 6.1 Dell handsets.

The phones popped up on a Dell website a bit early, and were quickly yanked, but they were there long enough for the whole world to notice. Nice strategic leak if you ask me. None the less, the phones feature:

7.2Mbps HSDPA support
Assisted GPS
2 Megapixel Camera
VGA video call capability
4 hours of talk time and 200 hours of standby

I don't think there is enough here to make a splash in the Smartphone market. Maybe someone needs to send Dell an iPhone, a Blackberry Thunder, and a Google G1. It seems like Dell was to busy with their own plans to realize that there are already some really great smartphones out there, and the Traveller 117 and 127 won't join them.
